Nobel prize winner Daniel Carleton Gadjusek will spend a year behind bars after pleading guilty to two counts of sex abuse on a boy he adopted from Micronesia, in the Pacific Ocean.
Professor Gadjusek's plea bargain with Maryland prosecutors closes a case that began when FBI agents found references to his published journals in an investigation of pornography on the Internet.
The National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Maryland, where he was head of the laboratory for Central Nervous System Studies, announced his immediate retirement. He could be eligible for parole after nine months in the Maryland county jail.
