Resolution of the saga of the Royal Greenwich Observatory could be just around the corner. All the signs point to the RGO's name returning to the meridian in time for the millennium. Last year, the Particle Physics and Astronomy Research Council said it planned to consolidate its astronomy technical support at a new centre in Edinburgh, leaving the future of the RGO in Cambridge up in the air.
An announcement on the future of the famous name is expected early next month, but it is strongly believed it will go to the National Maritime Museum at Greenwich, the home of the RGO when founded by Charles II.
