Rwandan raid on Uganda

五月 10, 1996

Makerere University in Uganda has become a fertile recruiting ground for the Rwanda government, whose National University of Rwanda was virtually destroyed by ethnic violence in 1994. The National University asked Uganda to help replace staff who were wiped out or went into exile.

Recruitment from Makerere accelerated because more English-speaking students registered at the National University of Rwanda when the Rwanda Patriotic Front took control of the country.

According to the vice chancellor Emmanuel Bugingo, Rwanda will employ lecturers in law, commerce, medicine, applied economics and education.

The remaining lecturers have gone on strike demanding higher wages and asking the government to reform higher education. They want to be paid market rates and for the universities to be run as private sector institutions.
