A BIOCHEMICAL sensor that can be implanted under the skin could soon free diabetics from the routine of checking their blood sugar levels. The team of researchers at Manchester University led by ? have developed the device and believe that the sensor could eventually be linked to an insulin-delivery system to provide automatic correction of the blood sugar level.
A study commissioned last year by the British Diabetic Association estimated that diabetes costs the National Health Service Pounds 2 billion every year. Patients can lose limbs or eyesight, suffer kidney damage, heart disease or strokes if their diabetes goes untreated.
