Anyone engaged in the search for Europe's most miniature institution of higher learning could do worse than look at the new Directory of Higher Education Institutions in the EFTA States, just published by Kogan Page.

Alongside the University of Oslo (34.012 students) and Vienna, which makes no concessions to flexible routes to education, having 79,038 full-time students and no part-timers, are Iceland's Hvanneyri agricultural college with 29 students and the Dramatic Academy of Iceland with 25. But the winner in the bonsai stakes, with a name as long as its register, is the Evang. Religionspad Ak. der Evang. Kirche A.B. Und H.B. in Osterreich, with an unsuperstitious 13 God-fearing students.
