The University of Abertay Dundee had better make the most of its Scottish Higher Education Funding Council monies while it can. A Scottish parliament is likely to mean closer scrutiny of higher education, and one Dundee resident is already anxious to do her civic duty.

She has rung SHEFC to say that excavations for the university's new library have uncovered old bones, deeply upsetting and shocking her schoolboy son. She is aghast to discover that Pounds 3 million of public funds have gone into this sacrilegious project and has warned SHEFC that all public subsidy should be halted immediately. She has not been mollified by the university's assurance that the bones, from a burial site several centuries old, have been reinterred elsewhere with due dignity.
