Research groups from public sector institutions of higher education and research may apply. Each proposal must have a named British and Hungarian project coordinator. Priority will be given to disciplines in the EU Fifth Framework Programme and to:

AVERT (Aids Education and Research Trust) UK-based Postgraduate Research Studentships for medical research on HIV and Aids.

The purpose is to enable graduates to undertake full-time medical research over three years on a project leading to a PhD in the field of HIV and AIDS. AVERT is interested in research which furthers the understanding of:

* immunological/ virological response to HIV infection

* clinical features and pathogenesis of HIV infection

* delivery, effectiveness and impact of treatments for HIV infection and Aids.

AVERT does not accept applications from individual students. Students who wish to be nominated, should approach the head of the department or establishment where they would like to study. The Mental Health Foundation http://www. mentalhealth.org.uk/ Applications invited for research projects which address the impact of non-pharmacological interventions on the quality of life for people with dementia and their carers. The following areas have been identified for funding:

* Interventions which address the behavioural and psychological symptoms of dementia.

* Evaluation of initiatives which focus on hearing the voice of people with dementia. Applications may be up to a maximum of Pounds 300,000 but we expect to fund a range of projects and smaller applications are encouraged.

Funding is also available for research studentships (PhD) in any area of dementia research which is consonant with the above aim of improving quality of life of people with dementia.

Fax 0171 535 7474.Email: mhf@ mentalhealth.org.uk Economic & Social Research Council (ESRC) www.esrc.ac.uk Understanding the Evolving Macroeconomy Research Programme Outline research proposals invited and the aim is to study the behaviour, governance and management of the UK economy in a rapidly changing world economic environment. It is organised around two related themes:

* Economic growth and fluctuations. The aim is to improve understanding of how to improve the performance of the UK Economy.

* Economic Policy: Design, Governance and Practice.

The aim here is to investigate how domestic and international institutional arrangements might be improved to assist private sector decision making and economic management.

The programme has been allocated a budget of Pounds 5 million over the period 1998/99 to 2003/04. National Institutes of Health, USA www.nih.gov Bioengineering Research Grants The objective is to encourage research in basic bioengineering areas. Applications for BRG awards should focus on an area of bioengineering research where progress is likely to make a significant contribution to improving human health.

Research into Ageing Three types of award: Research project grants - to support salaries, some equipment and travel, and consumables).

Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother Fellowships - for postdoctoral workers.

Prize PhD Studentships - to encourage able young scientists to train in ageing research.

Medics and scientists working in the UK are eligible. Applications for research project grants and PhD studentships require the submission of a one A4-page outline. The synopsis should include: the title of the project, its research location and its supervisor; a description of its objectives and method; estimated level of grant required and its likely duration.

Applications for fellowships are submitted directly through the appropriate application form, available on request. The Research Advisory Council meets twice a year - in November and March. In November, applications for project grants and studentships are considered; in March, applications for fellowships and project grants are considered.

Epilepsy Research Foundation Supports basic clinical and scientific research into the causes of epilepsy and possible prevention and cure.

Deadline: December 1 Wellcome Trust and Government Initiative Joint Infrastructure Fund The Pounds 600 million fund seeks to transform the scientific research environment within UK universities. The fund covers science and engineering within the remits of the Wellcome Trust, the BBSRC, the EPSRC, the ESRC, the MRC, the NERC, and the PPARC. Minimum bid level of Pounds 750,000.

BBSRC David Phillips Research Fellowships These support outstanding young scientists in the initial stages of an independent research career. Applicants must be postdoctoral scientists with up to five years active postdoctoral research experience.

BBSRC Advanced Research Fellowships These are designed to support scientists in independent research. Applicants must be postdoctoral scientists with a minimum of five years active postdoctoral research experience.

BBSRC Senior Research Fellowships Designed for scientists permanently employed in university research and teaching. Intention is to allow them to devote themselves to research at a highly productive period in their careers. Candidates will be recognised as outstanding scientists and will have proved exceptional research and interpretive ability at an international level.

The Roche Organ Transplantation Research Foundation The foundation will support research into solid organ transplantation, particularly where there is unmet medical need. Those eligible for operating grants are established members of academic staff in universities, transplant centres and research institutes. The aim of the research must be to improve the outcomes of recipients of organ transplants.

The Fellowship would be held for three years (subject to review) in a UK research institute. Part of the Fellowship shall be spent in a US research institute to widen the experience gained from working in the UK centre.

Small Ecological Project Grants Special consideration is given to amateurs and to those with no alternative sources of funding. Value of the award: up to Pounds 1,000 for travel and up to Pounds 1,000 for other costs. Closing dates: January 1, April 1,July 1 and October 1.

World Cancer Research Fund Science Department 105 Park Street London W1Y 3FB Tel: 0171 343 4200 Fax: 0171 343 4201 Food, Nutrition and Cancer Applications are invited for a small number of three-year grants up to a total of Pounds 100,000 to fund epidemiological and experimental research into the effects of food and nutrition on the origins, causes and prevention of cancer. Innovative proposals are encouraged; particularly those designed to increase understanding of dietary means to prevent cancer, or to improve the quality of life of the cancer patient.

Preference is given to applicants based in the UK and elsewhere in Europe. Application forms are available from the above address.

Department of Health Policy Research Programme Information and Communications Technologies (ICTs) Research Initiative Outline proposals are sought in the areas:

* Uses of ICTs in the provision of information;

* Uses of ICTs in support of clinical and managerial decision making and to improve healthcare delivery;

* Technologies to assist in working across boundaries;

* Public and professional acceptability;

* Criteria for the successful implementation of ICTs.

Grants are given for studies in the arts, humanities and the history of ideas. Awards are at postgraduate level and are intended as supplements to other sources of funding.

The correspondent also administers the Charles Wallace Trusts for Bangladesh/Burma/ Pakistan which give grants towards the costs of fees and maintenance of postgraduate students from these countries.

The college awards the PDSA Small Animal Postgraduate Scholarship for specialist postgraduate study investigating the nature and treatment of diseases in small animals with a view to alleviating suffering. The scholarship is open to Fellows or Members of the college who are citizens of the United Kingdom, Colonies or Commonwealth countries or of Eire. Up to Pounds 10,000 for one year in the first instance is available for research at an approved UK university.
