Student leaders at St Andrews University have "regretfully" accepted a per cent rent rise, saying that important concessions have been made. The university court will vote later this month on proposals to raise the average weekly rent from £75 to £98. The university's planning and resources committee says the residences make an annual loss of £550,000 because of artificially low rents, "a major and unsustainable deficit" that is taking funds away from teaching and research.
