Edinburgh University's Neil MacCormick, standing as the Scottish National Party candidate in Argyll and Bute, is scarcely a carpetbagger since both his family and that of his wife come from the area.
His driver was becoming increasingly exasperated as canvassing kept turning into family reunions, so Professor MacCormick soothed him by suggesting they go to the small hamlet of Strone where he had no relations. When they arrived, Professor MacCormick began his loudspeaker electioneering, whereupon a man emerged from a nearby house, looking decidedly grumpy. The candidate apologised for the noise, earning the reply: "I'm not complaining. I'm one of your cousins."
