The Arts and Humanities Research Board has announced the first ten projects to be funded under its Research Centres Scheme. More than 145 institutions applied. The programme provides a maximum of Pounds 875,000 over five years. The projects are:
* The Centre for the Study of the Domestic Interior, run by the Royal College of Art, Victoria and Albert Museum, and Royal Holloway College
* The Centre for Jewish-Non-Jewish Relations - Southampton University, Reading University, and the Institute of Jewish Policy Research
* The Centre for Irish and Scottish Studies - Aberdeen University, Queen's University, Belfast, and Dublin University
* The Centre for the Study of Asian and African Literatures - the School of Oriental and African Studies and University College London
* The Centre for Byzantine Cultural History - Queen's, Newcastle University, and Sussex University
* The Centre for the Study of Renaissance Elite and Court Cultures - Warwick University
* The Centre for British Film and Television Studies - Birkbeck College, Sheffield Hallam University, Ulster University, Central St Martin's School of Art and Design, the Royal College of Art, the British Film Institute, Exeter University, and Brighton University
* The Centre for Cultural Analysis, History Cultural Analysis, History and Theory - Leeds University
* The Centre for Northeast England history - Durham University, Teesside University, Sunderland University, Newcastle, and Northumbria University
* The Centre for Studies of the Evolution of Human Cultural Behaviour - University College London and Southampton University.
