SIR Stewart Sutherland, principal and vice chancellor of the University of Edinburgh, is to head a study of teacher training to advise the Dearing committee on the contribution made by higher education and schools.
The study will look at the responsibilities of the main agencies involved, including government departments, the Office for Standards in Education, and the Teacher Training Agency, which this week launched a national curriculum for teacher training. It will explore entry standards, teacher supply and quality assurance.
Sir Stewart said: "Higher education plays a vital role in the arrangements for training and educating teachers. My study will focus on the strengths and weaknesses of the current system and suggest areas where further examination or discussion may be desirable to ensure that higher education's contribution can be most effectively organised and funded."
Responses have been requested by February 28.
