The third EUREKA meets Asia event will take place from 26 to 30 May in the Macao Special Administrative Region, China.
The EUREKA meets Asia events aim to reinforce scientific and technological cooperation between European and Asian countries. The initiative also seeks to promote increased participation by Asian entities in European programmes such as EUREKA and the EU framework programmes for research.
The two previous events saw the participation of 28 countries and regions, were attended by 1,800 people, and resulted in 776 bilateral meetings.
The theme of this year's event is 'green enterprises for sustainable development'. This is in response to the debate triggered by the last event in 2000 on the need for societies to adopt sustainable development technologies and stimulate research collaboration and technology transfer in the environmental field.
The Research Commissioner Philippe Busquin has lent his support to the event, and representatives from the Commission will be present to host a workshop on the Sixth Framework Programme.
The event organisers, the Portuguese agency for innovation, the Macao productivity and technology transfer centre and the Chinese science and technology exchange centre, will also collaborate with the Commission to ensure the participation of the candidate countries at the event.
EUREKA meets Asia 2003 will bring together researchers and entrepreneurs from Europe and Asia in a large forum composed of an international technology exhibition, a brokerage event, and an international conference that will focus on three core areas:
- Environmental protection: technologies for the implementation of the 'green city' concept;
- Life sciences: pharmaceuticals, medicine and food-based natural products, Chinese natural medicine;
- Information technologies: software applied to the management of a 'green city' and of the tourism industry.
