* Success in attracting and retaining ethnic minority students and lecturers should be added to the criteria for judging universities' performance, according to Natfhe. This autumn the funding councils are due to publish performance indicators measuring each institution's success in categories including widening participation by under-represented groups and student progression. However, the performance indicators define these groups by the job of the household's main breadwinner, the postcode of the family home and the type of school attended, rather than the colour of a student's skin.
