Researchers from the universities of Aberdeen and Edinburgh have discovered that three common genetic variants could predispose certain people to schizophrenia. Working in collaboration with international research teams, scientists from the Scottish institutions conducted two major studies that analysed DNA samples from about 42,000 people across the world. The results, published in the journal Nature, revealed that those with the genetic variants could have a 1 per cent to 2 per cent higher risk of developing the mental health illness than those without.
