Universities Scotland praises access efforts

Universities Scotland will spell out the lead Scottish higher education has taken in promoting social inclusion and pledge to do better still at a seminar today.

Nearly one in two young Scots goes into higher education, and 17 per cent of all students in Scotland come from non-traditional backgrounds, compared with the average of 12 per cent in the United Kingdom.

Universities Scotland has found that 90 per cent of institutions work to raise awareness of higher education in the community, 71 per cent offer off-campus courses, almost 70 per cent run access courses, and 57 per cent run summer schools.
