A historian has uncovered new archive material and personal documents belonging to Adolf Hitler, calling into question the popular understanding of the origins of the Third Reich. Thomas Weber, a lecturer in political history at the University of Aberdeen, has pieced together a picture of Hitler which explodes the myth that he was a brave soldier in the First World War, and that his war-time experiences directly led to his brutal dictatorship. According to Dr Weber's research, Hitler did not serve near the frontline, and lied about the number of survivors in the battles in which he fought. There was also no obvious anti-Semitism within Hitler's regiment.
