St George should be replaced as the national symbol of England by the oak tree, argues an academic. Markus Eichhorn, a tree expert from the School of Biology at the University of Nottingham, makes the claim in a video on the university's Test Tube website. He says that the nation's patron saint has no particular association with England, whereas the oak tree has been part of English culture for thousands of years. He argues that 29 May - already known as Oak Apple Day or Royal Oak Day - should be designated England's national day.
