Displays of altruism or selflessness may make people more attractive to potential mates. This was one of the key findings of a study carried out by researchers at the University of Nottingham. The investigators questioned more than 1,000 people about the range of qualities they look for in a partner, including examples of altruistic behaviour such as regular blood donation and volunteering at a local hospital. Their findings, published in the British Journal of Psychology, conclude that women place significantly greater importance on altruism than other traits.
