A Hong Kong philanthropist has donated £10 million to an Oxford college to help it create a dedicated building for the study of China. The centre at St Hugh's College, which will bring together academics from across the University of Oxford, will be named the Dickson Poon China Centre after the benefactor, who owns one of Hong Kong's largest retail companies. A site has been earmarked for the £20 million building; construction is planned to start in 2012. The university's chancellor, Lord Patten, said the centre will build on a relationship that dates back 400 years.
