The rock guitarist Johnny Marr has returned to the scene of one of his best gigs in his new position as visiting lecturer at the University of Salford. As guitarist in The Smiths, he performed at the university's Maxwell Hall in 1986, an event he described as an "amazing gig". Last week, he returned to give a lecture to a 1,000-plus audience of students and others, arguing that "in an age of stifling conservatism, outsiders need to be cherished". In his role at the university, he will deliver a series of workshops and masterclasses to music students.
