AUT votes to boycott RAE
The Association of University Teachers has voted to boycott the 2006 research assessment exercise. Delegates to the AUT’s summer council in Eastbourne agreed that they were concerned about the “destructive impact” and the bureaucracy of the RAE and would call on members to refuse to be involved with it.
Young blame student years for debt
Nearly two-thirds of young people who are in debt blame their student years for their problems, researched reveals today. About 63 per cent of 18 to 30-year-olds who have money problems claim they were caused by student debts, while 28 per cent of people who regularly miss debt repayments also blame their time as a student for their situation, according to Kensington Mortgages.
More women wanted in building trade
The government today launched a drive to persuade more women to take up jobs in the building trade. Construction minister Brian Wilson told a Construction Industry Training Board conference in London that a huge culture change was needed to tempt more women into building and help prevent a skills shortage.
Cancer is children's biggest fear
Schoolchildren worry more about cancer than the impact of terrorism, according to a survey today. Researchers for Cancer Research UK found 65 per cent of schoolchildren in England and Wales regarded cancer a greater cause of worry than terrorism and war in Afghanistan.
