George Lundberg, editor of the Journal of the American Medical Association for nearly 20 years, has been fired after publishing a study revealing that most university students agreed with President Clinton's contention that oral sex does not constitute "sexual relations". The AMA accused Dr Lundberg of involving the journal in political controversy. The study, based on a 1991 survey of 599 undergraduates at a midwest university, reported that 59 per cent believed oral sex did not equate to "having sex" and suggested the impeachment row may stem from a "lack of consensus" in the United States about what sex is.
