Aims to provide advanced research training to postdoctoral biologists or physical scientists so that they are able to exploit principles of mathematics in addressing important research problems in biomedicine. Scientists with a doctorate in a biological subject can, for example, be supported to acquire mathematical skills or, alternatively, those completing a PhD in mathematics or the cognate physical sciences can be funded to apply their skills to an important biomedical problem. Research disciplines that might benefit in particular from the interdisciplinary training programmes and research collaborations that can be proposed through this scheme include:
-bioinformatics, including genomics and proteomics;
-structural biology and crystallography;
-neural networks research;
-modelling of complex biological systems or infectious diseases.
Fellowships must be based in an eligible UK institution. The trust is particularly interested in applications that involve new collaborations between departments in biology or biomedicine and departments in mathematics or computing.
Preliminary applications should be received before March 1 2001. Full applications, if invited, must be received at the trust by May 30 2001.
