About 70,000 - about 25 per cent - of German students drop out each year before taking exams, according to figures from the Higher Education Information System. One in five said they gave up because they had chosen the wrong degree course, while 13 per cent blamed lack of money. The most common reason for women abandoning their studies (77 per cent) was to have a baby.
