Two students have died in clashes with Ethiopian riot police at the University of Addis Ababa in protests over how the university is guarded. The government told students to end a weeklong sit-in or face expulsion after talks with the education minister broke down.

University of Hawaii professors have ended a 13-day-old strike after reaching an agreement on pay. More than 40,000 college students have been unable to attend class since April 5. Teaching is expected to resume on Thursday.
Buenos Aires
The Argentine government has offered extra funding to universities that encourage students to take courses it recommends and threatened to cut funds to those that do not. Former education minister Hugo Juri, head of a government manpower planning committee, said: "We intend to reward universities that show imagination and help fulfil the country's practical needs."
Minsk
Michal Plavec, a coordinator of the Czech human rights group People in Need, has been deported and banned from entering Belarus for five years. The Belarusian KGB alleged that Mr Plavec - who had been helping Belarusian students expelled from universities for political reasons to study in the Czech Republic - took part in opposition protests.
Moscow
Almost all the Vietnamese students stranded in Russia after the Soviet Union's break-up have been repatriated, a conference to mark 20 years of cooperation in education between the two countries was told. A 1981 agreement allowed about 33,000 Vietnamese to receive higher education in Russia.
Abidjan
Students from the Central African Republic studying at the University of Cote d'Ivoire have seized their country's embassy in protest against non-payment of bursaries. They claim the university has refused to allow them to sit their finals because of unpaid tuition fees. They also said that they face eviction for non-payment of rent.
