The largest and most advanced supercomputing facility in the UK was opened this week at the University of Edinburgh. Hector (High-End Computing Terascale Resources), which is four times faster than its predecessor, will allow scientists to undertake increasingly complex computer simulations across a range of disciplines. The £113 million service, which is funded and managed by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council on behalf of Research Councils UK, will be operated by the Edinburgh Parallel Computing Centre. It will run for six years.
