The UK's first masters course in educational assessment for teachers and examiners will be offered at Bath Spa University from this autumn. The universities of Durham, Leeds and Warwick will follow next year. Bath Spa's MA programme will allow secondary schoolteachers and further education college lecturers to assess the quality of project work completed in schools and colleges as part of the new national curriculum initiative linked to the 14-19 diploma. The new qualification has been developed by the Chartered Institute of Educational Assessors. Graham Herbert, deputy head of the institute, said: "Assessment is too often seen as the poor relation of teaching and learning. For example, the average teacher receives just five hours of assessment training as part of a nine-month PGCE course."
