The "Scottish Samurai", Thomas Blake Glover, who is credited with laying the foundation of the modern Japanese economy, has been commemorated in a memorial seminar at The Robert Gordon University. The event is part of a programme of activities in the UK and Japan this year to mark the 150th anniversary of the Anglo-Japanese Treaty on Amity and Commerce, which established diplomatic relations between the two countries. Mr Glover, born in 1838, left Aberdeen for Japan as a young man and introduced a range of innovations, including railways.
