A lecturer is using mobile-phone voting to ensure that quieter students take part in his tutorials at the University of Portsmouth. Manish Malik, a senior lecturer in electronic and computer engineering, texts the students questions. If they get the answer wrong, the system rephrases the question. "Voting systems like the ones in Who Wants to Be a Millionaire? have been around for a while," said Mr Malik. "I've added a level, in that I give personalised feedback or another question depending on the response." A summary of responses appears on a screen in the hall. "The student can see he or she is not alone in getting an answer wrong," he said.
