SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY FACILITIES COUNCIL
The STFC's Science in Society Fellowships are aimed at academics with significant research experience who have demonstrated a track record in outreach or communications work.
- Award winner: Maggie Aderin
Institution: University College London
The fellowship will allow the continuation of Dr Aderin's work with the media and as a speaker for schools. She is a scientific space expert for BBC Breakfast and BBC News 24 and is currently researching and developing new programme concepts for the International Year of Astronomy.
- Award winner: Colin Pulham
Institution: University of Edinburgh
This project aims to inspire young people about science, convey the nature of the research process, support teachers in curriculum delivery and promote dialogue between scientists and the public. Demonstration lectures and hands-on workshops highlighting research into the effects of high pressures on selected materials will help achieve these aims.
The STFC's Large Awards Scheme provides funds from £15,000 to £100,000 for projects expected to have significant regional or national impact. Project teams must have strong links with the STFC's scientific research community.
