A £5 million award will pay for a new biomedical research centre at the University of Liverpool. The centre, to be set up with the Royal Liverpool University Hospital, will specialise in pancreatic digestive diseases - the only unit of its kind in Britain to do so. By focusing on "translational research", it aims to offer patients the benefits from scientific breakthroughs more quickly than currently. Robert Sutton, a professor of surgery who led the successful bid for funds from the National Institute for Health Research, said the facility would capitalise on existing strengths in the university and hospital.
