The captains of Celtic and Rangers football teams have set aside their competitive differences and made a joint appeal for donations to build a new cancer research centre in Scotland. Stephen McManus and Barry Ferguson kicked off the Beatson Pebble Appeal, which aims to raise £10 million for the Beatson Translational Research Centre. The centre, which seeks to convert basic research into improved treatment, is a joint development by the University of Glasgow, the Beatson Institute, Cancer Research UK and the Greater Glasgow and Clyde Health Board. It will form part of the Glasgow Centre for Cancer Research, one of the most comprehensive cancer centres in the UK.
