I read with interest your research report concerning the relatively modest level of French academic salaries and its apparent link to “institutional equality” between junior and senior staff, democratic decision-making and job security and autonomy (“French professors fall short in global salary comparison”, News, 30 March). Given the corrosive levels of staff discontent with senior management in many UK universities, might the adoption of “French” pay scales provide one of the solutions?
