Professor Dame Nancy Rothwell, vice-chancellor of the University of Manchester received Times Higher Education’s (THE) Outstanding Achievement Award at last night’s THE Awards – widely referred to as the ‘Oscars of higher education’.
University of the Year went to Anglia Ruskin University which achieved significant reach and impact across multiple centres in the East of England. It had its best-ever performance in the Research Excellence Framework, gained a Queen’s Anniversary Prize and was the best performing UK university for health and well-being in THE’s Impact Rankings 2022.
The THE Awards are the biggest celebration in the higher education calendar, attracting hundreds of entries from individuals, teams and institutions from across the UK and Ireland.
Dame Nancy Rothwell has been president and vice-chancellor of the University of Manchester for 14 years. She is one of the country’s leading science advocates, serving as founding president of the Royal Society of Biology, is non-executive director of AstraZeneca, a champion of the North of England and a beacon for women in higher education and beyond.
Over a thousand people gathered at the ACC Liverpool to celebrate the UK and Ireland’s great national success stories: their higher education institutions.
John Gill, editor, THE
“After 19 years, hundreds of winners and many thousands of entries, one might expect to get used to the amazing examples of excellence highlighted by the Times Higher Education Awards. But the sheer depth of innovation, talent and dedication that exists at every level of universities across the UK and Ireland never fails to impress.
“From examples of individuals making extraordinary contributions, to teams and cross-departmental initiatives leading the way, and of course our University of the Year, Anglia Ruskin University, demonstrating the impact that a great institution can have on cities and regions, our winners exemplify the broad spectrum of ways in which universities are excelling and making a difference.”
