Editor’s note: 17 May 2017

During the bibliometric research phase for the THE World University Rankings 2016-17, conducted by Elsevier, a single physics paper was missed in exceptional circumstances. This paper was a massive file size and the automated upload process rejected it without notification, in a one-off error that has now been corrected. The missing paper is now included in the Scopus data used to calculate the World University Rankings and the THE data team has created an estimate of the impact of this paper’s inclusion. The only institution significantly affected by this change is the National Research Nuclear University MEPhI, Moscow, which will now take joint 84th position in the Physical Sciences subject ranking, in line with our corrections policy. This change does not affect any other institutions, who retain their original positions.
