University of the Sciences

Founded in 1821, The University of the Sciences (USciences) is a higher learning institution specialising in science education and healthcare. USciences has its main campus in the Spruce Hill neighbourhood of Philadelphia, just three miles from the city centre.

Academic study is offered across four colleges; Pharmacy, Health Sciences, Arts & Sciences, and Business & Policy. Research is a core part of an educational experience at USciences, with focus on core fields of cancer biology, neuroscience, gerontology, and inter-professional care. The college of Arts & Sciences also has a Music programme, with performance and rehearsal facilities in the Wilson Centre, and collaborations with the University of the Arts in Philadelphia’s Center City region. Also offered are minors in Spanish, humanities, literature and creative writing.

The College in Pharmacy was the first of its kind in North America, and in 1995 opened its own museum. Housed inside is a collection of over 12,000 pharmaceutical and medical objects and artefacts spanning five centuries, and a decor designed to recreate a late 19th century pharmacy.

Athletics teams are known as the Devils, and compete in the NCAA Division II. There are six men’s sports programmes and seven women’s, as well as a mixed team for rifle shooting. As part of a a $30 million campus expansion scheme, the The 78,000-square-foot Athletic and Recreation centre offers expansive facilities for both varsity and intramural sports.

Notable alumni include Eli Lilly, founder of the global pharmaceutical company for which bearing his name, Paul J. Nigrey, key in the development of rechargeable batteries, and Michelle Fontana, a developer of a knee therapy machine.

The university motto translates as ‘to know all, this is health’.
