I had imagined that the use of the phrase "monopoly state socialism" when debating the future of National Health Service provision was the last refuge of third-rate journalists.
David Marsland's espousal of the cliché in his contribution (Letters, October 1) is surely a disturbing sign of "dumbing down" within academia.
