What does it say about the status of teaching (and, by extension, students) in some universities when a news report refers to academics being “freed” from “the burden of teaching” and “protected” from teaching as if it were potentially contagious or addictive (“Fast-track Liverpool fellows set aside essays and in-trays”, 16 January)? Do universities use similar language in their marketing material for prospective students?
It reminds me of the story about the academic who was offered a reduced research load so that he could concentrate on his teaching (I made that up).
