Kevin Fong's painful experience in the country of his ancestors (Working Knowledge, February 25) is not unusual. Many other British Chinese do not speak Chinese and have suffered in the same way. He should know, though, that the people he met in Beijing were almost certainly speaking Mandarin, not Cantonese.
