The gender income differences could be due as much to a failure to recruit junior male academics as to female academics not achieving pay parity. In certain disciplines so few men are being recruited by UK universities that the gender balance begins to resemble those in secondary and primary schools.
This progress towards pay parity may be masked because academics at the start of their careers earn less.
