So, women's studies at the University of Warwick is now part of war and conflict studies ("Last women standing", 31 January)? Similarly, the enlightened attitude of Birmingham's Centre for First World War Studies has now made possible their first one-day conference on women and war, taking place next month. Women's studies as a degree may have done its job, its themes and issues having entered the mainstream, so we count that as a victory. But clearly the fight still goes on, and women are still standing together. Who would have thought we would be shoulder to shoulder with military historians?
