The picture used to illustrate my piece ("Beautiful sounds from foul singers", THES, November 24) was misleading. First, it was printed upside down. More important, the bats shown in no way resemble my study animals, for they are fruit-eating bats that are neither ugly nor bad-smelling. Furthermore, fruit bats do not echolocate and are much easier to survey than their insectivorous relatives. An echolocating bat is pictured left so readers can judge for themselves.
