Nicola Humble's monograph on cakes doubtless makes for an edifying read ("Tasty slice from the sweet trolley", 12 August), but she's missed her topical calling, if only barely. Had she devoted her energies to pie, she would have performed a public service to reviewers - and headline writers - across the academy.
