In the 1990s, I was a committee member of a Christian Union that operated outside the auspices of the student union. While this did little to limit our work on campus, I do feel it is important for freedom of expression that religious societies, pressure groups and political parties be able to restrict membership to those whose beliefs are congruent with their aims. Without this, any student can undermine a society simply by joining it.
