Last academic session, little more than a third of our clients came to counselling because of depression, measured in terms recognised by GPs, and anxiety, symptoms of which included phobic behaviour, panic attacks and obsessive rituals. Only about 2 per cent of students used the service -hardly evidence of a "therapy culture". Only 1 per cent cited transition from home to university as the key reason for seeking counselling.
