I am not leaving the University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology because I object to the merger with Manchester University or the way it has been handled ("Cooper quits Umist over merger", THES, September 26). On the contrary, I support the merger and I wish the new university every success. My decision to leave is personal.
The change allowed me an opportunity, after 29 years at my beloved Umist, to take on new challenges at Lancaster University.
