I applied for a British Academy senior research fellowship for 2002-03 ("Prizes lost in 'golden triangle'", THES , October 3) in the belief the scheme was targeted at senior staff who had not yet achieved full professor status. The BA website said it was "aimed at established scholars ... in mid career".
The rejection letter said my application was "A graded, fully suitable for an award". Yet four of the seven awards went to professors.
