So, a battle is under way over Nelson's significance ("Historians battle over Nelson's reputation", THES , December 5). Since this battle seems to contain fashionable "what-iffery", is it time to consider what Britain would have been like had Napoleon won? Given the progressive and democratic principles of the French revolution, I'm inclined to suggest a better place.
