Sally Hunt, the University and College Union's general secretary, hailed the ruling on Lancaster University's fixed-term contracts as "a major victory" ("Fixed-term staff score legal victory", 22 April). Why, then, for the past 12 years did the union condone the practice of sacking staff by not renewing their contracts?
