Ellen Hazelkorn throws doubt on the validity of university league tables, but could have gone further ("Handle with care", 8 July).
The impulse to measure is at root Gradgrindian and these days is a sign of a neoliberal approach. A league table tells you more about those who drew it up and use it than it does about the institutions allegedly being measured.
